TALK | La Belle Assemblée: Gillray and the Socialites | Tim Clayton

James Gillray, Modern Hospitality, 1792.

James Gillray (1756-1815) is best known as a political caricaturist, famous for his send ups of George III and ‘Little Boney’, yet caricature had also become popular as a style of drawing adopted by amateur artists to satirise fashionable personalities. Working in this mode himself, with his long-standing companion and publisher, Hannah Humphrey, Gillray created some brilliant prints.

In this talk Tim Clayton, author of the recently published study James Gillray: a Revolution in Satire, describes how through a long and mutually reinforcing series of impudent designs, Gillray made comic celebrities out of women such as Cecilia Johnston, Albinia Hobart and Sarah Archer who sought prominence in society and got more than they bargained for.

James Gillray: A Revolution in Satire by Tim Clayton is published by Yale University Press. Ticket holders will receive a special offer of 20% off the retail price via their website (UK orders only, free UK P&P).

Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
