Barbara Hepworth is now acknowledged as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.

This talk by Eleanor Clayton, author of a new and definitive biography on Barbara Hepworth and curator of her retrospective exhibition Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life currently at The Hepworth Wakefield, provides a fascinating look at Hepworth’s public statements and private correspondence, offering a penetrating insight into her remarkable life, work and legacy.

Reproached for single-mindedness in her lifetime, with critics and commentators describing both the artist and her work as ‘cool and restrained’, Hepworth’s approach was in fact multifaceted and interdisciplinary; bringing together her interests in dance, music, poetry, contemporary politics, science and technology. Through her artistic practice, as well as through friends and networks, Hepworth brought seemingly conflicting disciplines and ideas into one coherent and inspirational philosophy of art and life.
