TALK | The Story of ‘British’ Art | Charlotte Mullins

How do you tell a national story of art in the British Isles when geographically the land comprises 6,000 islands and its history is one of migration, movement, destruction and change? What story has been told in the past, how has it been reimagined today and how will it be shaped in the future?

Join Charlotte Mullins, author of The Art Isles: A 15,000-year story of art in Britain and Ireland, as she brings to life Ice Age engravings in Wales, a Roman mosaic in Rutland, Pictish stones, stately home ceilings, Liverpool’s Pantheon, Belfast’s political murals and the Uffington white horse. She looks at the changing tastes for art in the British Isles and considers why certain artists were whitewashed from history or saw their work destroyed or rejected while others were courted and imported.

The Art Isles: A 15,000 Year Story of Art in Britain and Ireland by Charlotte Mullins is published by Yale University Press, London. Ticket holders will receive a discount when purchasing the book via their website.
