Best known for his enduring images of the Suffolk countryside, such as The Hay Wain and The Cornfield, John Constable is one of Britain’s most famous artists. This talk, however, examines the artist’s work during the later period of his life and discusses how his mature style differed from his earlier achievements. From 1825, until his death in 1837, Constable tackled familiar themes afresh whilst also diversifying his practice with new subjects. In pursuit of naturalism in landscape he evolved a freer and more expressive style in oil, but also more fully explored the possibilities of watercolour and printmaking.

Nicola Moorby is a specialist in British Art of the 19th and 20th centuries, and her talk will tie in with the Royal Academy’s forthcoming major exhibition, Late Constable.
