Bringing together a diverse range of paintings and drawings which span the artist’s whole career, many of which come from international lenders, the exhibition Rubens & Women at Dulwich Picture Gallery challenges the popular assumption that the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) only painted one type of woman.

Instead, it presents a more nuanced view of the varied and essential role played by women in the artist’s life and work, including the impact of his female patrons, muses, models and beloved family members. Rubens was called ‘a prince of painters and a painter of princes’, but no other male artist has created such potent images of female power, assurance, determination, commitment, and beauty.

This special illustrated talk by co-curator Dr Amy Orrock, brings the story of Dulwich Picture Gallery’s ground-breaking exhibition to life through a discussion of key works.

Rubens & Women is at Dulwich Picture Gallery from 27 September 2023 to 28 January 2024.

Proceeds from ARTscapades ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
