Melanie Vandenbrouck is Chief Curator at Pallant House Gallery, where she led on the gallery’s current exhibition Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists and its catalogue. Join ARTscapades for an introduction to this major exhibition which brings together over 150 works to explore artistic relationships, identity, and mutual influence in modern and contemporary British art. Tracing a journey through 125 years of portraiture, the exhibition showcases paintings, prints, drawings, photography, sculpture, and installations that capture the distinctive gaze between creative peers.

Featuring some of Britain’s best known artists including Lucian Freud, Lubaina Himid, David Hockney, Lee Miller, Eric Ravilious, Paula Rego and many more, the exhibition unveils friendships and emulation, as well as homages to earlier artists, through intimate portrayals.

From rare portraits of celebrated figures to new commissions, discover connections that have shaped British art and new perspectives on artistic circles, from the Bloomsbury Group to the Young British Artists.

The exhibition Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists is at Pallant House Gallery until 2 November 2025. The accompanying book edited by Miriam O'Connor and Melanie Vandenbrouck, is published by Yale University Press (May 2025); talk ticket holders receive a code to use for 25% off via their website here.
