TALK | Love and Landscape: Stanley Spencer in Suffolk | Amy Lim

Stanley Spencer, Southwold 1937, Aberdeen Art Gallery (Courtesy Aberdeen City Council, Archives, Gallery and Museums Collection).

This ARTscapades talk accompanies the exhibition, Love & Landscape: Stanley Spencer in Suffolk, held in partnership between Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury and the Stanley Spencer Gallery, Cookham. Exhibition lead curator Dr Amy Lim shows how Spencer’s art was rooted in both his personal relationships and his deep sense of place.

Whilst his connection to Cookham is well known, Suffolk also held a profound resonance for the artist, as he married fellow artist Hilda Carline in Wangford, and later returned to Suffolk in the wake of his marriage breakdown. We explore Spencer’s family, friendships and artistic development through his visits to Suffolk in the 1920s and 1930s.

The exhibition Love & Landscape: Stanley Spencer in Suffolk is at Gainsborough’s House until 22 March 2026, before moving to the Stanley Spencer Gallery from 4 April to 1 November 2026 The accompanying catalogue is supported by a grant from ARTscapades..
