Over the centuries countless artists have depicted the city of Edo/Tokyo. In this talk, Clare Pollard, Curator of Japanese Art at the Ashmolean Museum and co-curator of their exhibition Tokyo: Art and Photography, will explore ways in which this vibrant metropolis has been depicted in woodblock prints – a medium that has been closely associated with the city for over 300 years. From the iconic images of Hokusai and Hiroshige to modernist prints of the 1920s and '30s, the medium gives an insight into a constantly evolving city.

Proceeds from our ticket sales benefit museums, galleries and other arts-based organisations and projects.
