In memory of David Hockney, we are making available an ARTScapades talk first given in May 2021, in which the author and art critic Martin Gayford speaks about his acclaimed book Spring Cannot be Cancelled, written in collaboration with David Hockney. It is an uplifting manifesto which affirms art and nature’s capacity to divert and inspire.
In this talk, Martin Gayford discusses Hockney's Normandy drawings and paintings, alongside works by van Gogh, Monet, Bruegel and others. He reveals a Hockney absorbed by spring in Normandy and by the themes that had fascinated him for decades. It was a passion that culminated in the Royal Academy 2021 exhibition, 'David Hockney: The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020'.
